Cooking with Kids - Full Story
Thursdays at 1 pm at the Harriston OEYC Children love to do things they see adults doing. Young children especially love to cook. And teaching them to cook at our centre is a gift that will last a lifetime. Little ones help with spooning flour or oatmeal in a measuring cup, pouring milk or other required in liquid in a recipe. The wee chef will readily stir the ingredients. Children learn new words as they "dice" carrots or "grate" lemons. They are introduced to kitchen safety and where foods come from. They assist in cleaning up too. In our program, children have made such foods as pancakes, soup, applesauce, fruit salad, salad in a a bag and created their own individualized mini pizzas. We have had guest speakers visit and have toured a local restaurant. Cooking is a versatile activity that assists in reaching a phlethora of objectives. Our cooking program provides many opportunities for cognitive, social, and cultural learning. They see how food changes before their eyes when an egg becomes a hard-boiled egg or how cream becomes butter. A child learns in a cooking activity the importance of sharing in a group situation and realizes the importance and necessity of cooperation. Program facilitators have the awesome and delightful task of exposing children and parents to healthy foods and to help develop good eating habits. Cooking with kids is a fun, positive, and engaging activity with benefits for both parents and preschoolers. Call the centre today to registar for our next session of Cooking with Kids. Until then ....happy cooking !! submitted by Lucy Kraemer For more information please call the Community Resource Centre, 519-843-7000, or toll free at 1-866-840-3249.
